What Photo Splitter is for

Photo Splitter is useful when you have a scanned image, scanner bed capture, or album page containing multiple printed photos. Instead of cropping each photo by hand from scratch in a separate editor, you can let Grafiq find likely photo regions first, then correct the boxes before exporting.

• Add padding around each crop so the result is not too tight.
• Export separate JPG or PNG files.
• Keep the original source file unchanged.

How to split scanned photos in Grafiq

1. Open Photo Splitter.
   In Grafiq, open More → Photo Splitter.
2. Load your scan.
   Click Open File… and choose your scanned image. On Mac, you can also open a scanned PDF directly.
3. If you are using a PDF on Mac, choose the page.
   Use Prev Page and Next Page to move between pages. If the page appears sideways or upside down, use the Orientation setting.
4. Choose a detection mode.
   Use Plain background for white scanner beds or simple backgrounds. Use Album / textured background for mounted photos or busier album pages.
5. Click Auto-Detect.
   Grafiq will try to find the separate photos and draw crop boxes around them.
6. Fix the boxes if needed.
   Use Add Box to draw a missing crop box. Click a box to select it, drag inside it to move it, or drag the handles to resize it. Use Delete Selected Box to remove a bad box.
7. Set export options.
   Choose an Output Folder, Filename Prefix, Start Number, and output format: JPG or PNG.
8. Add padding if needed.
   If the boxes are a little too tight, increase Padding (px). For example, padding 10 adds a small border around each exported crop when space is available.
9. Export the crops.
   Click Export Crops…. Each detected or manually added box is saved as its own image file.

Windows PDF workaround

The Windows version of Photo Splitter does not open PDFs directly. If your scanner saved your photo sheet as a PDF, use this workflow:

1. Open Converter in Grafiq.
2. Convert the scanned PDF page to a JPG image.
3. Open the exported JPG in Photo Splitter.
4. Run Auto-Detect, adjust boxes if needed, and export the separate photos.

This keeps the workflow simple: PDF first becomes an image, then Photo Splitter works from the image.

Tips for better results

• Leave space between printed photos when scanning if possible.
• Use Plain background for white scanner beds.
• Try Album / textured background for album pages, but expect to adjust boxes manually.
• Lower strictness may find more boxes; higher strictness may be more selective.
• Use manual boxes when auto-detect misses a photo.
• Add a little padding if the exported crops are too tight.
• Use JPG for normal photo exports and PNG if you prefer lossless output.

What to watch out for

• Overlapping photos may not separate cleanly.
• Glare, dark borders, textured pages, binder holes, and busy album backgrounds can confuse auto-detection.
• Auto-detect is a starting point, not a guarantee. Manual box editing is there for cleanup.
• The original source image or PDF is not overwritten.
